Request for Volunteers for TWU Committees
The Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) wishes to advise the membership that there is at present vacancies within the following appointed committees:

- 2010 Bargaining Communication and Tactical Committee
The Executive Council has created the 2010 Bargaining Communication and Tactical Committee to assist with this round of bargaining with Telus and will be a key to the Union’s success in bargaining. The Committee will consist of Business Agents and rank-and-file members from across Canada appointed by the President and approved by Executive Council.
We are seeking volunteers to work on the Committee. The Committee will require a significant commitment of volunteer time.
The mandate of the 2010 Bargaining Communication and Tactical Committee shall be as follows:
The Committee will work with the guidance of and in cooperation with the Bargaining Committee to distribute timely and pertinent information about bargaining to members, the labour movement, and the public as appropriate. Where necessary, the Committee will assist the Bargaining Committee in planning membership bargaining information meetings.
The Committee will develop and implement tactics to support the efforts of the bargaining committee and will coordinate the implementation of those tactics.
The Committee will ensure that all TWU/Telus bargaining unit locals have active Local Solidarity Committees in place and will:
- Communicate with those committees on a regular basis.
- Maintain up to date contact information for each Local Solidarity Committee.
- Ensure that Local Solidarity Committees are aware of how to communicate with the committee.
- Provide Local Solidarity Committees with all necessary information required to implement the Committee’s tactics and communications.
- Employment Equity Committee
To make recommendations for employment policies and practices to accelerate the attainment of equality for members of the designated groups: women, aboriginal peoples, person with disabilities and members of visible minorities.
The goal of Employment Equity is to:
- eliminate employment barriers for the four designated groups identified in the Employment Equity Act : women, persons with disabilities, Aboriginal people, members of visible minorities;
- remedy past discrimination in employment opportunities and prevent future barriers;
- improve access and distribution throughout all occupations and at all levels for members of the four designated groups;
- foster a climate of equity in the organization. Employment Equity is a strong component within Human Rights.
The TWU is looking for interested volunteers to join the TWU Joint Employment Equity committee. If you believe in Equity in the workplace and would like to be part of the committee, please apply.
- TWU Plant Steering Committee
Steering Committees will soon be created in order to assist the Union with networking platforms that are paramount to the Union's success and preparation for bargaining. Steering Committees will, meet via conference calls, discuss workplace issues and concerns, and assist the Union in developing strategies for addressing problems in the workplace.
For the Plant/Craft Steering Committee we are seeking volunteers who are working in the following areas: I & R, Business Technicians, Construction, Splicers, Plant Service People, and Network, C.O.
If you work in one of the above noted areas, are a member in good standing, have an interest in improving your work life and supporting your co-workers, and would like to volunteer, please express your interest by applying.
Plant Steering Committee Mandate:
- The purpose of the Plant Steering Committee will be to gather information, coordinate information sharing between locals with Plant members.
- The Plant Steering Committee will meet by telephone or video conference as required.
- The Plant Steering Committee will submit a budget for the next year to the Finance Committee by Dec 15th of each year.
- The Plant Steering Committee will be composed of one Business Agent who is assigned to service one or more locals with Plant members, and Plant members from various locals appointed by the President and approved by Executive Council.
- TWU Clerical Steering Committee
The TWU is calling for members of the TWU/TELUS Bargaining Unit to volunteer in a new networking initiative - Workplace Steering Committees.
Steering Committees will soon be created in order to assist the Union with networking platforms that are paramount to the Union's success and preparation for bargaining. Steering Committees will, meet via conference calls, discuss workplace issues and concerns, and assist the Union in developing strategies for addressing problems in the workplace.
Under Clerical Steering Committee we are currently seeking volunteers from the following areas: At-Home Agent, Business, Residential and Credit Card Call-Centres (wireless and wire line).
If you work in one of the above noted areas, are a member in good standing, have an interest in improving your work life and supporting your co-workers, and would like to volunteer, please express your interest by applying.
Clerical Steering Committee Mandate:
- The purpose of the Clerical Steering Committee will be to gather information, coordinate information sharing between locals with Clerical members.
- The Clerical Steering Committee will meet by telephone or video conference as required.
- The Clerical Steering Committee will submit a budget for the next year to the Finance Committee by Dec 15th of each year.
- The Clerical Steering Committee will be composed of one Business Agent who is assigned to service one or more locals with Clerical members, and Clerical members from various locals appointed by the President and approved by Executive Council.
- TWU GLBT Committee
The Executive Council passed a motion at their May meeting to establish a GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered) Committee.
The mandate of the TWU GLBT committee shall be as follows:
The TWU GLBT Committee will work with the Executive Council and membership to promote equality and solidarity among and within the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered communities.
Their responsibilities will include gathering and disseminating information about the needs and issues facing our members in the GLBT communities, and to develop strategies to enable the union to take a proactive stance in advancing the interests of the membership and the labour movement. The committee shall also take a lead in raising awareness of these issues through action plans and communications to provide support and to promote solidarity throughout the trade union network. This committee will help facilitate local involvement and encourage membership participation and activism on a continual basis.
The TWU GLBT Committee will consist of one member of Executive Council and other members appointed by Executive Council.
- TWU National WCB Strategy Committee
Convention 2008 MOTION PASSED ON SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 2008
BE IT RESOLVED that we strike a committee with the mandate to develop a National Strategy to provide assistance to our members with WCB applications and appeals; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this committee be comprised of one representative from Executive Council and a Delegate from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec to be appointed; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the committee bring the National Strategy back to Executive Council and the membership, no later than the 2009 TWU/STT Convention.
- TWU Human Rights Committee
The TWU wishes to advise members that the TWU Human Rights Committee is seeking members in good standing for appointment to the Committee.
The Committee generally meets 4 times a year either in person or by conference. You would be expected to keep yourself informed on current Human Rights issues within your workplace as well as communicate these issues to the rest of the committee. In addition you will be expected to attend the 2010 TWU Convention.
It is preferred that members have experience in the area of Human Rights and/or Respectful Workplace, are good communicators and have a strong desire to protect the rights of others.
Consideration is to be given to ensure regional representation on the committee. The committee currently requires 1 member from Ontario and 1 member from Quebec.
- TWU Contracting Out, Monitoring and Action Committee
The TWU wishes to advise members that the TWU Contracting Out, Monitoring and Action Committee which was created at the June Executive Council meeting is seeking members in good standing for appointment to the Committee. The Committee will generally meet by teleconference. You would be expected to assist in monitoring the contracting out of members' work and making recommendations to Executive Council in order to protect the interests of TWU members. It is preferred that members have experience in organizing planned actions and are good communicators. Consideration will be given to ensuring regional representation on the committee.
- TWU Technology Committee
TWU is looking for young members to participate in the Union's newly created Technology Committee, whose purpose is to study new technology and its possible effects on our members. Members of this committee will meet via teleconference to discuss relevant issues and to make recommendations to the TWU Executive Council on what the Union can do to prepare for and to respond to new technology. Consideration will be given to ensuring regional representation on the committee.
- National Health & Safety Committee
The National Health and Safety Committee is looking to fill the following vacancies. Only TWU members in good standing working in the following areas will be considered at this time:
- One Member from Shaw Communications
- One from Flagging certification
- One Alternate Member from BC
- One Alternate Member from Alberta South
Preference will be given to members who have health and safety experience and/or training, but members who have an interest in learning about health and safety issues will be considered. Duties of members appointed include the following; promoting health and safety in their respective area providing input to the committee on issues in their industries, and will be responsible for following up on health and safety concerns with their employer. As well, they will act as a liaison for members in their respective workplaces with respect to health and safety issues, including ergonomics. The committee meets, either by conferencing or face-to-face meetings, up to six times per year, as required, but members are also required to follow up on issues or projects between meetings.
- TWU Language and Cultural Committee
TWU is looking for members from the ethnic and cultural communities to participate in the union's newly created Language and Cultural Committee. The purpose of this committee is to reach out to members from ethnic and cultural communities in an effort to better address their needs and concerns. Members of this committee will meet via teleconference to discuss relevant issues and to make recommendations to the TWU Executive Council on what the union can do to promote participation of members who belong to Canada's various ethnic and cultural communities.
- TWU Political Action Committee
The TWU wishes to advise members that the TWU Political Action Committee is seeking members in good standing for appointment to the Committee.
The Committee will generally meet by teleconference. You would be expected to become involved in political action in your surrounding community.
It is preferred that members have experience in organizing planned actions, are good communicators and have a strong desire to involve people in political action and action campaigns.
Consideration will be given to ensuring regional representation on the committee. The committee currently requires:
* 1 member from Quebec and,
* 1 member from Alberta
- TWU Youth Committee
TWU is looking for young members to participate in the union's newly created Youth committee, whose purpose is to reach out to our young members in an effort to better address their needs and concerns. Members of this committee will meet via teleconference to discuss relevant issues and to make recommendations to the TWU Executive Council on what the union can do to promote participation of our younger members.
