Constitutional Resolutions Vote Results

Seven constitutional resolutions were passed at the March 2009 Convention and sent out for ratification by the membership. Locals arranged meetings so their members could vote on the resolutions to ensure that the ratification process was completed in the first half of 2009.

The first resolution, which gives the Executive Council the power to appoint an interim elected Business Agent, passed by 90%.

The second resolution, which involved a change in the wording about the election of the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Convention from the March Convention to the Annual Convention, passed by 99%.

The third resolution, which changed the size of the majority of Convention Delegates required to recall an elected officer of the Union from 66-2/3% to 55% was rejected, with 48% of votes cast in favour.

The fourth resolution, which expanded the Constitutional provision for reinstatement to membership in the Union to include members who have been expelled as well as those who have resigned, passed by 96%.

The fifth resolution, which expanded the ban on members of other organizations who are working against the TWU from holding office in the TWU to include a ban on members of the TWU who are working to the detriment of the TWU from holding office as well, passed by 85%.

The sixth resolution, which allowed retirees who are members of the TWPP to stand for election as trustees of the plan in the event that the President or Secretary-Treasurer or both are not members of the TWPP, passed by 75%.

The seventh resolution allowed the Convention to set the date of its annual meeting rather than having it scheduled automatically during the first week of March and gave the President the power to set the time and place in the event that the Convention has not scheduled the meeting, as long as he or she gets the approval of the Executive Council. In addition, this resolution gave the Executive Council the power to call Bargaining Conventions at any time. This resolution passed by 97%.
