December 13 - Ottawa Rally to Support PSAC Striking Museum Workers
Posted 2009-Dec-10

The 420 PSAC members employed by the Museum of Civilization and the War Museum have been on strike since September 21, 2009.

These museum workers earn less than other museum workers, so wages are an important issue in this strike, but job security and the protection against contracting-out are the key issues.  The Local recently requested binding arbitration but the employer has refused and the government has not intervened. The strikers are also fighting for the important role of museums in preserving and promoting our cultural heritage, and for the continued investment in culture and the arts.  These are public goods worth preserving.

Everyone is invited to join the “Our Country, Our Culture” rally in Ottawa on Sunday, December 13th in support of these striking members.  There will be a march from the War Museum at 1:00 p.m., followed by a concert at the Bronson Centre at 2:00 p.m.  Canadian musicians, Ian Tamblyn, Mighty Popo, Marcel Aymar, and more will be performing. Guests will also include union and political leaders.

-           1:00 p.m. March begins at War Museum

-           1:45 p.m. Doors open at Bronson Centre

-           2:00 p.m. Concert begins, 211 Bronson Ave., Ottawa, ON

With the upcoming holiday season, this Local needs your support. There will be a donation ceremony at the event in which John Gordon (PSAC President) will announce the unions and organizations that have donated. Supporters will also be able to send wishes of solidarity at a speaker’s corner. These messages will then be posted on YouTube. Please feel free to bring your flags and banners.
