USW President Addresses TWU Convention Delegates
The Telecommunications Workers Union welcomed Mr. Ken Newman, President, United Steelworkers Union (USW), who addressed TWU convention delegates Tuesday morning.

“We sign strategic alliances because we want to build unity among like-minded unions.  We want to work together on common objectives & take advantage of each others strengths.” Mr. Newman continued, “We know that TWU is concerned about the way the telecommunications industry is regulated – we are regularly fighting for better regulation in resource sector and the manufacturing sectors.”

The TWU first publicly spoke of a possible strategic alliance last October in a Hotline to its members. The Union has supported many USW initiatives, namely its recent battle with the Brazilian global mining giant Vale. Please refer to the October 29, 2009, Hotline at
www.twu-stt.ca for more details. The agreement between the TWU and USW maintains “Both unions will fully retain their autonomy and independence, leaving undisturbed their constitutions and bylaws, their assets, memberships and collective agreements.” Today’s Executive Council (EC) recommendation to form a strategic alliance was passed with a majority vote.

The USW represents employees in various industries including call centers and credit unions, mines and manufacturing plants, offices and oil refineries, restaurants and rubber plants, sawmills and steel mills, security companies, nursing homes, legal clinics, social agencies and universities. The TWU, once again, thanks the USW for its continued support and solidarity.

Convention Report Update

In addition to the strategic alliance with the USW, the convention accepted the EC’s recommendation to create a new Local in Montréal (Local 604).   The EC report was also approved on Tuesday.
The Finance Committee presented its report and will continue to do so at scheduled times throughout the week.
The Structural Change Committee presented the results of a survey that was sent to the TWU membership last October.  The survey report results were forwarded to the Constitution Committee whose job it is to make a recommendation.
The day’s final report was presented by the Constitution Committee which will continue
