Minister of Industry, Tony Clement, spoke at the Canadian Telecom Summit in Toronto on Monday, June 7, 2010.
Clement said opening up Canada’s telecom sector to allow more foreign investment will help Canadian companies get access to the money they need to be their best. The Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) disagrees.
“We fear that opening up the Telecom industry in Canada will also open up the door to more offshoring in search of cheap labour to the detriment of Canadians,” said George Doubt, National President, TWU. “Without the proper legislation in place, the industry will continue to offshore jobs and take advantage of Canadian communities.”
