International Solidarity Rally for Wisconsin Workers– April 2
Posted 2011-Mar-24

Wisconsin workers have been on the front line of an all out assault from the Republican right which launched a vicious attack on union workers and collective bargaining rights following the US election.

Rather than working together with public employees to address the fiscal challenges of the state, the Governor has chosen to create a union busting campaign against the rights of all working people.

Unions across Canada are joining in solidarity with these workers as a show of support and to send their own governments a clear message that they will not tolerate similar anti-union tactics.  George Doubt, President of the Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) declared, “An attack on union workers is an attack on all workers.” He continued, “Our sisters and brothers in the US are in the fight of their lives following this brutal attack on trade union and collective bargaining rights, and we stand firmly behind them in support.”

In a recent press release, Gil McGowan, President of the Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) which represents 140,000 workers said, "The Wisconsin decision to strip the ability to bargain collectively from public-sector workers is an attack on their basic rights."  He added, "More than that, it is an attack on all working families, on the middle class and an attack on democracy."
