International Women’s Day Events

International Women’s Day (IWD) is marked on March 8 every year.  It is a global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women.  The Canadian Government’s Status of Women’s theme for 2010 is "Strong Women. Strong Canada. Strong World" (http://www.swc-cfc.gc.ca/dates/iwd-jif/index-eng.html).  This year’s United Nations theme is "Equal rights, equal opportunities: Progress for all".

Calgary, Alberta

Event: Calgary Public Library Celebrates International Women’s Day

About: Be inspired by successful Alberta women who will discuss how they create balance in their professional and personal lives. A free lunch and speakers’ panel will take place at the Central Library, located at 616 Macleod Trail SE (across from Cit Hall) in the John Dutton Theatre on the second floor. Speakers include Nirmala Naidoo of CBC, Kathy Sendall, former SVP at Petro-Canada, Sharon Carry, CEO of Bow Valley College, Pat Letizia, Executive Director of Alberta EcoTrust, and author Aritha Van Herk.

Event: International Women’s Day 2010 Edmonton

About: A multicultural International Women’s Day will be celebrated on March 8, 2010, in Edmonton. The theme of IWD 2010 is ‘Inspiring Women’, and Edmonton is filled with many women who are inspiring.

Venue: This year’s celebration will include the W.I.S.H. (Women’s Issues, Stories & Hopes) Forum followed by dinner and an awards presentation.

Event: The Path to Employment Success- A free breakfast event for unemployed women.

About: Times Change Women’s Employment Service is hosting a Free breakfast event for unemployed women to celebrate International Women’s Day and learn about employment strategies and career success with 5 dynamic career women.

Event: Women of Rock

About: A festival to benefit Montreal Women’s Shelters. All participating bands have at least on e female- all profits donated to SOS Violence Conjugale (a 24-hour hotline for abused women looking for help).

Organization: Triggered Response blurs the prescribed boundaries of modern rock music; influenced by the illnesses of the world we live in. This is music with a message, this is Triggered Response. Using classically simple rock songs fuelled by the aggression of contemporary punk, dynamite grooves inspired by the loops of rap music or stripped down acoustic melodies. These songs, front-lined by haunting vocals, bring to focus the issues saturating today’s society.  Triggered Response presents to you not music, but movement.

About: The Conseil Régional de Québec- Chaudière-Appalaches has organized a dinner for its many hard working members and supporters to celebrate the achievements of Monique Allard, Representative for the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, who has dedicated many years in support of women’s issues.

About: This rally will highlight the lack of women’s voices at the G8/G20 meetings. The Conference following the rally, will feature 15 roundtable discussions with conclusion and recommendations presented to the group in plenary. Guest speakers include Semhal Getachew, a leading Ethiopian lawyer, women’s advocate and researcher. Live entertainment, including well-known Aboriginal Hip Hop artist JB The First Lady and others.

Venue: The IWD rally will meet at noon at the Vancouver Art Gallery (North side), located at 750 Hornby Street. The conference which follows the rally will begin at 1 p.m. at the Vancouver Public Library, located at 350 West Georgia Street.
