In Memoriam – A. Gordon Cooper

Remembered by all as a charismatic, hard-working and devoted husband and father, A. Gordon Cooper will be dearly missed.  Gordon was hired as the first President of the Federation of Telephone Workers in 1974 after the federation council voted to make the union presidency a full-time position.

  We wish to acknowledge and thank Gordon for his many years of service and his dedication to the trade union movement.

The Cooper family published the following obituary in the Victoria Times Colonist on February 12-13, 2011:

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alfred Gordon Cooper, on February 5, 2011.  Born in Sheffield, England, on June 29, 1929.  Survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy.  Children: Kim (Jeannie), Jayne (Paul), Paul (Ellie).  Six grandchildren.  Great-grandson Trystan.  Brother Alan (June), and Nephew Jon (Clare).

Gordon and Dorothy immigrated to Victoria in 1953, where he worked at The B.C. Telephone Co. for thirty years, before retiring in 1984.  While there, he was elected President of the Federation of Telephone Workers.

A Visitation and Memorial Reception will be held at McCall Bros. Family Centre, Johnson at Vancouver Street on Thursday, February 17, 2011, from 2-5 p.m.  Our special thanks go out to the doctors and nurses of the Royal Jubilee Hospital, who truly made Gordon’s last days as comfortable as possible.
