Rally to Protect Good Jobs – March 26
Posted 2011-Mar-25

The entire cleaning and maintenance staff at the Brentwood Town Centre stand to lose their jobs as a new property manager takes over the mall and looks to contract the work out. The workers have been able to win benefits for their families over the years and make improvements to their wages.

Now Shape Properties, the new managers, have made it clear that they have no intention of retaining staff or making a commitment to maintain wages and standards for the workers when they contract out the work. Brentwood Mall used to be considered a community partner. Back in 2008 they won the “Burnaby Community Spirit Award.” But what kind of community partner eliminates decent paying jobs with benefits in our community? There is no excuse for Shape to profoundly disrupt the lives of the 17 workers and their families. As property managers and with 50 per cent ownership of the mall, Shape absolutely has the power and responsibility to do the right thing.

Tell Shape Properties that Burnaby needs good jobs! Real community partners don’t kick workers to the curb. Tell them to use a contractor that respects workers’ jobs and what they have gained over the years. Write to:
