Support Campaign to Halt Calgary Public Library Budget Cuts
Posted 2010-Nov-18

The Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) Political Action Committee urges TWU members to support the Campaign to halt Calgary Public Library budget cuts

by stepping up the letter-writing campaign to ensure more library jobs and services are saved.

Libraries provide a valuable learning and recreation opportunity for people of diverse backgrounds and ages and with a variety of interests.  From fiction to biographies, books on tape to DVDs, organized children’s activities, etc., there is something in the library that will interest nearly everyone.

The Calgary Public Library budget was facing a cut of $2.8 million, which would have led to a dramatic reduction in service hours and the loss of jobs.  Library workers at CUPE 1169 launched an urgent letter-writing campaign to fight the cuts and the city has now altered its position and is now looking to shave $500,000 off the budget.

A personalized letter, even a short one, is likely to get much more attention in City Hall.  However, if you don’t have time to write your own letter, a draft letter that you can use as the basis for writing your own letter can be found at the following link: http://www.afl.org/index.php/View-document/239-2010-Oct-Letter-to-Mayor-Councillors-re-Calgary-Library-budget-cuts.html
