It is a fact that the cost of prescription drugs has been steadily increasing. As a result, governments across Canada have been forced to allocate more and more money towards health care systems.
This, in turn, has resulted in cutbacks to other government services and is a threat to the Medicare system as a whole. However, there may be good news. A groundbreaking new report, The Economic Case for Universal Pharmacare,
was released on September 13 by the Canadian Health Coalition and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. The report is endorsed by doctors, researchers and economists and outlines a plan for a Pharmacare program that would not only provide coverage for all Canadians, but could also save up to $10.7 billion in spending.
The Canadian Health Coalition is a public advocacy organization dedicated to the preservation and improvement of Medicare. Membership in the Coalition is comprised of national organizations representing nurses, health care workers, seniors, churches, anti-poverty groups, women and trade unions, as well as affiliated coalitions in nine provinces and one territory.
