TELUS Offshoring Work to Guatemala
Posted 2009-May-29

TELUS recently announced to employees and the Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) that it is hiring 50-60 workers in Client Account Management Wireless (CAM) and 100 workers in Client Care Wireless (CC) in Guatemala.

The new employees in Guatemala will also service Canadian customers according to the information provided to the TWU by TELUS and begin working in August 2009. In a memo to employees sent May 26, TELUS said that it was "placing some of its growing workload with the new TELUS team in Guatemala."
John Carpenter, TWU National Vice President responded to the news by saying, "The TWU is very disappointed with this announcement. Why doesn't TELUS place some of its 'growing workload' with Canadians who support their products and line their pockets?"
TELUS goes on to explain that "staying competitive is critical to ensuring [its] continued strength and employment opportunities here in Canada, better meeting our clients needs and staying ahead of the rapidly changing technology and competitive landscape in the telecommunications industry."
"How does employing low-cost work outside of Canada ensure employment opportunities in Canada? Companies such as Shaw and Rogers employ Canadians and remain competitive and successful. An increasing number of telecommunications companies are bringing back work that had been contracted overseas."
TELUS continues to offer Voluntary Separation Packages as it grows work offshore. Many employees cannot move and will essentially be forced to accept a package. Is this how TELUS shows its employees and Canadians who buy its products that it is being a good corporate citizen?
Please support the TWU by signing the online petition at www.keepjobsincanada.ca and letting the government know how you feel about corporations like TELUS who continue to send jobs offshore.
