TWU in the News Outsourcing doesn't ring true
Posted 2009-Apr-21

The Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) was recently interviewed by Cartt.ca for an article which appeared on their Web site (www.cartt.ca) on April 16, 2009. The online news site publishes breaking news, in-depth feature stories, analysis and opinion geared specifically towards the men and women working in the cable, radio, television and telecom industries in Canada.

"We're concerned about jobs and resources that are being outsourced. Companies that earn their revenue in Canadian communities have a duty to reinvest in those communities. It's a reasonable thing (to expect) to help Canada grow," said TWU National President, George Doubt in response to TELUS' recent announcement to expand its newly opened facility in the Philippines.

TELUS spokesperson Shawn Hall told Cartt.ca no one in Canada is losing their jobs because of the new call centres overseas, and that it's "not practical" to create these jobs in Canada.  "We couldn't maintain the same cost structure and remain competitive. We have to compete for the hearts and minds of our customers."

If TELUS is serious about competing for the "hearts and minds of its customers", it will be honest about its off-shoring activities, stop growing its overseas business that caters to its Canadian customers and bring these jobs back to Canada.

The TWU is working very hard to let the media and public know about TELUS' restructuring and outsourcing activities.  Please look out for Friday's Message from the President that will appear on the TWU Web site and its You Tube site for more information.
